With the Philadelphia Eagles headed to New Orleans for the big game, Super Bowl fever has gripped the Delaware Valley.
How do local politicians celebrate the biggest football game of the year?
State Sen. Joe Picozzi (R-Philadelphia) said his favorite tradition is celebrating an Eagles win on the corners of Frankford and Cotman Avenues, in Northeast Philadelphia, where a large crowd of enthusiastic fans usually gathers.
Picozzi said his favorite Super Bowl food is a cheesesteak. He will be wearing a Brian Dawkins jersey. And he will be watching the game at McKenna’s in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia.
“My husband and I watched the last Super Bowl and championship games with good friends at the Marple Public House. (I think our table is already reserved!)” said Rep. Lisa Borowski (D-Radnor). “I love their Brussels sprouts and French dip sandwich.
“I never buy any new fan gear for a big game and will wear the Eagles ski hat I’ve been wearing all season. I have a new jersey, but they lost when I wore it, so I won’t be wearing it now. My husband, Mark, and our friends, the Mancusos, are my good luck charms!”
Rep. Martina White (R-Philadelphia) said, “I like watching the game with my family from the comfort of my sofa—up close, warm, and surrounded by all the Game Day food I can eat. Philly soft pretzel minis, wings, nachos, and cheese—it’s the best!”
White added, “This year, my family has an extra little good luck charm—Max. He’s a French bulldog, and he’ll be rocking his Eagles gear just like he did when we crushed the Commanders to win the NFC Championship. Go Birds!”
For Sen. Tracy Pennycuick (R-Montgomery), the big game is a family affair. “My grandkids love to decorate the house for a Super Bowl party—green everything.” Her favorite food is “definitely nachos, along with pizza and my husband always makes chili. My grandkids love pretzel bites and dippy sauce.”
Pennycuick does not have any good luck charms, but “I will definitely be wearing an Eagle’s shirt. We will be watching the game at my daughter’s house.”
State Sen. Frank Farry (R-Bucks) said he’s going to be “Hopefully watching the Eagles build a dynasty.”
His favorite snack is wings. Farry plans to wear “my lucky Eagles Hoodie. His good luck charm is, “rooting with my kids.”
Rep. Donna Scheuren (R-Harleysville) is a longtime Eagles fan.
“Back in college, and for roughly seven years thereafter, I was a season ticket holder at the old Veterans Stadium – in the nosebleed section or 700 level,” she said. “There were 28 of us, and I only had the one seat. We had a lot of fun back in those days. I used to bring my sleeping bag and zip myself up inside of it to stay warm.”
“My husband and I hosted Super Bowl LII back in 2018 when the Eagles last won, so the gang is looking for us to host again. I’m known for my crescent dogs with cheese, but only because I make them smaller than usual, so they’re bite size. Of course, they disappear a lot faster that way, too.”
“I’ve got my lucky Eagles pullover that I like to wear, although I’m also old school and have gear in the “Kelly Green” color, too,” said Scheuren. “My jerseys date back to the late 80’s and 90’s when No. 20 once belonged to Andre Waters. The Eagles had one of the greatest defensive lines of all times back then, coincidentally under head coach Buddy Ryan. As far as superstitions, if the Eagles are winning at half time, then everyone at the party must return to their same seats at the start of the third quarter.
“Go Birds!”
