MENSCH: Congressional Approval Unnecessary for Trump’s Strike on Iranian Nuclear Sites

On June 21st, at 5:00 pm (Eastern Daylight Time), US Navy submarines launched Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Isfahan Nuclear Technology Center in Iran. Then, at about 6:40 pm (EDT), the US Air Force dropped 14 Massive Ordinance Penetrator Bombs on the Fordow and Natanz nuclear sites in Iran. These actions were incredibly well-coordinated and demonstrate the might and will of the US military capability when it is called upon to protect freedom in the world.
I won’t litigate the actions or results of this action except to say, the real assessments, not the whimsical leaked politically unnecessary assessments—but the real assessments by U.N., Israel, Iran itself and the US suggest these actions were extremely successful and achieved the goal of destroying Iran’s nuclear program.
Rather, let’s focus on the feigned outrage from the political left. They are protesting the President’s actions, and a few are even using the “I” word: impeachment. How silly this all is? First, the US military’s actions removed the threat of the largest terror nation in the world possessing nuclear weapons. I say, “Hooray!” But some on the political left would rather have an armed Iran with nukes? Why? To what positive human safety end would they do this?
But they greatly insult the American people as they cry foul for Trump’s actions in light of the War Powers Act (WPA). Their acrimony is poorly placed in the context of American presidential history. Last week, a constitutional scholar noted that the WPA has not been invoked since 1942, when the United States entered World War II. He also points out that since ’42, there have been 125 US military actions around the world. These actions include (but are not limited to) those in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
Where was the political left’s outrage when Obama attacked Libya with bombings and a vast military assault? I didn’t hear a whimper, did any of you?
Perhaps the WPA is inadequately proposed. The War Powers Resolution, which was added during the Vietnam conflict to bolster the WPA, seems just as useless. Sometimes, sections in the Constitution and laws to support those sections need much greater specificity.
As our World becomes more dangerous, Congress needs to get its act together and work together. As a state Senator, I worked across the aisle when it was necessary to enact meaningful legislation.
Congress and all the liberal pseudo-political groups need to stop vilifying one another and instead work together. I did it. I know it’s possible! Sure, I had detractors, particularly a very poison pen from Lower Frederick Township, but so what? He was always wrong and had no meaningful message. He was wasting a lot of time on people who might have instead focused on fixing things rather than breaking them.
But back to Congress–while they’re at it, maybe they can address the issues of Social Security, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act, as well as other issues.
