Interns Margot Weitz and Dillon DiGuglielmo Win DA’s Mock Trial Competition

From a press release

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele announced that Margot Weitz from Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law and Dillon DiGuglielmo from Drexel University Thomas R. Kline School of Law were the winners of the District Attorney’s 22nd Annual Summer Intern Mock Trial Competition for second-year law students.

Taking second place in the competition was Matthew Schenkel from Widener University Delaware School of Law and Joseph Podraza from Widener University Delaware School of Law.

For the Mock Trial Competition, second-year law student interns prosecuted a fictitious murder case that involved legal hurdles and factual challenges to create difficulty. Other summer interns acted as witnesses and detectives. The jury for the final round on August 1 was made up of DA Steele, along with deputy district attorneys and assistant district attorneys.

Deputy District Attorney Kelly Lloyd sat as the judge for the final round. The competitors were certified legal summer interns—all second-year law students—who were approved and certified under Pa. B.A.R. 321 and 322 by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. That certification allowed them to practice law in Magisterial District Court and the Court of Common Pleas this summer under the supervision of the office’s Assistant District Attorneys.

Throughout the summer, the second-year law students were in court for various legal proceedings.  All summer interns were in court for murder trials and other significant proceedings.

The eight second-year law students were part of a summer intern class of 28 that included first-year and second-year law students as well as 16 undergraduates. College and law school interns came from Brown University, Bucknell University, University of Charleston, Drexel University, University of Eastern Kentucky, Hobart William & Smith Colleges, Kutztown University, Lafayette College, University of Michigan, Neumann University, Penn State University, University of Pennsylvania, Regent University, Rutgers, Temple University, Tulane University, Villanova University, and Widener University.
