As the long, warm days of summer settle across our beautiful county, an opportunity arises that is far more than just another community event. On the first Tuesday in August—this year, August 5—our neighborhoods will come alive for a special purpose. This is National Night Out, and I am personally inviting every resident to join us.

For those who may not be familiar, National Night Out is an annual, nationwide campaign that promotes strong police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. It’s a chance to step out of your home, meet your neighbors, and spend time with the very law enforcement officers and first responders who serve your community. Across Bucks County, our local police departments will be hosting block parties, cookouts, safety demonstrations, and family-friendly activities. It is, in its simplest form, a night out against crime.

But its importance runs much deeper than a single evening of fun. In my nearly 40 years of service in law enforcement, I have seen time and again that the bedrock of a safe community is not just the presence of police, but the presence of trust. When neighbors know one another, they look out for one another. When residents have a personal connection with their local officers—when they see them not just as a uniform and a patrol car, but as fellow community members—it breaks down barriers and fosters the open communication that is essential to preventing and solving crime.

National Night Out is where that vital work happens organically. It’s where a child gets to sit in a fire truck, a teenager can ask a police officer about their job, and a homeowner can get tips on neighborhood watch programs. It is an investment in the single most powerful public safety tool we have: our partnership. This event sends a clear message to those who would seek to do harm that our neighborhoods are organized, vigilant, and united with their law enforcement agencies.

I have the distinct privilege of witnessing the unwavering dedication of the men and women who wear the badge in this county every single day. From local municipal police departments to our own deputies, these public servants answer the call without hesitation, often facing difficult and dangerous situations to protect our families. National Night Out is a wonderful opportunity for you to show your support for them, and just as importantly, for them to show their appreciation for you. Your trust and collaboration are what enable them to do their jobs effectively.

I urge you to find an event in your area. Check the website or social media pages of your local municipality or police department for details. Take an hour or two on August 5th to come out, shake a hand, share a conversation, and strengthen the bonds that keep Bucks County a safe and wonderful place to live.

When we stand together, we are stronger. Let’s come together for National Night Out and reaffirm our shared commitment to our community.
